Interview: Violate Your Brain

We caught up with Mike Title this week. The guy who brings Violate Your Brain to The Macbeth every month. Armed with 5 questions regarding the event here’s what he had to say…

-Whats the vibe at a Violate Your Brain event?

“The vibe is drunk. You walk in and you move about and you drink a lot of shots, really slam then down and then you start kissing people and all the bass comes out of the speakers and people start chanting shit like ‘GET THAT FOOL’ and the bouncers come in and everyone is in lust and happy like heaven with Biggie Smalls and angels shaking booty.”

-What is the reasoning behind the name?

“Destroy everything. Sweat vociferously. Do everything rhythmically til it hurts.”

-The artwork for the events seem to follow a recurring kind of theme. Can you tell us the inspiration behind them?

“The theme is a big brain. The brain is a big holy sacred symbol of fertility and eroticism in my tribe.”

-Some of the events have been tribute related, such as Tupac anniversary death day party. Do you have anything like this planned for the near future?

“I plan nothing too much in advance. One never knows what is around the corner. Tupac was murdered by a big brain that was controlled by the CIA in a laboratory. You can read about it on the Internet.”

-What can people expect this Saturday at The Macbeth?

“Well anything. It is for each individual to make the party. The party is a state of mind before we choose to engage before we leave our beds and if you’re lucky when you go home you will have a party in your bed with maybe more than one lover. Take care of your livers children and beware cos at midnight to signify the end of this reign of illuminati terror by Jay Z and Beyonce we will be holding a satanic ritual where we slay the child that Rihanna has had with Jay Z. A knife will be plunged into the paper mâché baby to lift the curse at midnight. It the illuminati party and we are going to have a lot of fun. You really should come early.”

February 24th 1955 – October 5th 2011

“Remembering I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” – Jobs, June 2005.

As I sit in the Macbeth office, lurking the internet on my Macbook and texting girls on my iPhone, I thought it only right that this mornings roast should be about the man that made it all possible, Steven Paul Jobs.

As pretty much everyone on the face of the planet knows, Steve was a college drop out that went on to become the chief executive officer of Apple inc, a company that he co-founded from his garage in 1976. A man who had one of the biggest hands in taking music purchasing and sharing into the digital age and, of course, a man who became a millionaire at the age of 25.

But did you also know that Steve owned Pixar Animation Studios which made him the majority share holder for the Disney company and he was an executive producer in Toy Story (1995). He was also a practicing Buddhist.

In 1983 Jobs was ousted from Apple, the company he started, by John Sculley (a man Jobs had head hunted from Pepsi) with the backing of the board over disagreements on how the company should be run. This didn’t dampen his spirits though, he started a new company, NeXT Computer inc. The idea of NeXT was to run in direct competition with Apple and in March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web on a NeXT workstation.

Seeing NeXT proving to be a success made Apple, which was running at a loss, sit up and take notice and in December 1996, they bought the company for $400m. Within 8 months of the acquisition, Jobs was back as CEO of the company that he founded all those years ago and within 2 years, under his guidance, they became profitable again.

Since Steve regained control, Apple have seen success in The iMac, Mac OS X, the iPod, the MacBook, the iPad, the iPhone, Apple retail stores, and iTunes, all of which have become household names. He stepped down from the CEO position in August 2011 due to his health deteriorating. 2 months later, he lost his long standing battle with pancreatic cancer.

His death was announced by Apple in a statement which read:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”

So here’s to Steve, the man that without whom, we wouldn’t have Angry Birds or Facebook feeds full of drunk girls Photobooth pictures every Sunday morning. Cheers Steve! RIP

THE STRANGE BOYSLive Music





The 4 piece, Austin based rock ‘n’ roll band have recently announced details concerning their 3rd album which has excited me rather a little.






Released through Rough Trade, the third instalment from the Texas Garage Rockers is to be named Live Music. After much speculation and playground conversation as to wether the new record would simply be a ‘Live album’, it wasn’t until I saw the tracklisting which boasts 14 NEW, yes new tracks. This ended all rumours that we would only be hearing previous hits belted out to a crowd of screaming garage rock enthusiasts. Not that this would have caused much disappointment to me at all, but I would say I am more excited knowing Live Music will be jam packed with newly recorded material. Impressive huh? Almost as impressive as learning that the side B of Live Music was recorded in December of 2010 nearly a whole year ago! How did they manage to keep this under their hats so well for so long? perhaps they brushed it under the carpet and thought nothing of it while they begun work on the first half (side A) of the new album which was recorded later in April of 2011.




However secret those Boys decide to be, one thing is clear. It would appear the first single to be taken from this long awaited record is (surprisingly or strangely not) track number 1 Me and You. Now I would have thought that the first single release of a new album would be a track that has the bands fingerprints all over it. In the case of The Strange Boys, jangling guitar riffs from a Fender telecaster reminiscent of an early 1950s rock ‘n’ roll band. However this doesn’t seem to be the case here. Me and You is piano inspired and could be considered more mellow then you would typically label the bands over all body of work. Having said that, this isn’t unusual for the US rockers. Such tracks as The Unsent Letter and Da Da on previous albums display how the band are able to slow things down every once in a while. So I wouldn’t say its what you would typically expect, but I’m sure any fan would agree and say it’s still instantly recognisable as a strange boys track.



With the rest of the album still locked away in a very secure safe somewhere in the South of America I guess its just a matter of time before we know how the rest of Live Music will follow. Until then why not download the first single Me and You for FREE from HERE!

Brooklyn punks Cerebral Ballzy will give London a real taste of NY by bringing their riotous brand of 80’s hardcore and punk rock to an eager Hoxton crowd. Performing a wide range of tracks from their self-titled debut album ‘Cerebral Ballzy’, the crew that have been described as ‘Brooklyn’s wildest band’ are sure to finish the Sailor Jerry Presents series with an almighty bang.


Cerebral Ballzy along with all ‘Sailor Jerry Presents’ acts, share the attitude and energy shared by the late Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins, the tattoo pioneer known to many as simply ‘The Man’.
