On Thursday 1st December, We had the pleasure of playing host to one of the greatest bands in Punk Rock, Saves The Day. What Ever Happened To P-Rock? booked in this secret gig, and it was well worth it. Having an hour and a half of unplugged Saves The Day classics, and a beautiful little cover by Weezer, El Scorcho. The band themselves admitted to have not playing most of these tracks acoustically, but it still turned out beautifully. After I caught up with Chris, and asked him a few questions about the show…

How do you feel the show went? Any favourite parts?

Actually, it was my favorite show by far the band has ever played. Doing an all-request show is always fun, but the fact that the gig was acoustic made it special and memorable. I think my favorite moment was when people started stage diving from the bar and crowd surfing. And playing the Weezer song “El Scorcho” from Pinkerton was a hoot.

Would you do it again?

After the show went so well, I feel like it would be a great idea to set up more acoustic after-show parties and do all-request gigs at bars whenever possible. It was such a fun show, and we really felt energized by the crowd, and the feeling of love flowing in the room stayed with us for a week beyond that night. How bout next time we’re in London, we come back and jam out!

A few of your songs you hadn’t performed acoustically on the night. Did you enjoy this and might you bring in the future?

Yes, we loved doing the songs on the fly, and it actually breathed new life into songs we haven’t done in years. So we will definitely be incorporating acoustic versions of songs old and new into our live shows, since the experience onstage at Macbeth was so inspiring. Doing an all-request set is a challenge but it’s exciting too, and we were pleasantly surprised by the reaction from the fans and the good feeling we got playing the songs.

Think you’ll incorporate more covers into your sets in the future? El Scorcho went down amazingly!

Yea that was so much fun! We’re heading to Australia in February to play the Soundwave festival and we’re doing two sets a day; one set of originals, and one set covering Pinkerton in its entirety. We had so much fun covering “El Scorcho” at Macbeth that we may in fact start doing our own recordings of certain covers to release on 7 inch, so stay tuned for that!

Do you get to do many smaller shows anymore?

Not as many as we’d like. I actually prefer the intimacy of the smaller shows, where you can feel the whole crowd and connect on a deep level with so many people crowding around you and in your face. The big shows are nice too, but I came from the underground hardcore/punk scene, and the small shows remind me of my roots.

How was the tour with Yellowcard? Any interesting stories to share with us?

We had a total blast together, and we became fast friends. Sharing a bus, things can get intense quickly, so there were many nights staying up late passing around a bottle and laughing about tour stories. Amsterdam was particularly weird in the best way, out all night wandering the side streets seeing the lights on the canals and tripping down the cobblestone alleys. I’m told Amsterdam is always quite a wild place for adventure, and we definitely made the most of our two days stay.

What does the future for Saves The Day hold and when will the UK be seeing you again?

We hope we can make the UK our second home, since we love playing for the fans. Unlike America, the average level of musical intelligence seems quite high in the UK, and we feel like we fit in more with British bands and fans. So hopefully we can come back for the festival season next year, and maybe more support tours in the fall or winter. So spread the word! After we finish touring on our new album Daybreak, we’ll start writing material for the next album and then we’ll keep touring onward into the future. See you next time!

Fresh off the back of their recent European tour, Antlered Man will be seeing out 2011 with one final performance at our very own Macbeth on Tuesday 6thDecember. After the recent success of Octobers Goo Grrrl records label launch party, the boys have decided to return with support from the fantastic Exit International. However this time around they come bearing festive cheer when they invite us all to Goo Grrl records Xmas party! Ahead of Tuesdays Christmas bonanza we thought it were only polite to catch up with the band, ask them a few little questions and get a clearer idea into what may be in store for us. Read on children….

Other then performances from yourself and Exit International, what festive treats can we expect at next Tuesdays X-mas party?

‘We like to dress up, but it wont be festive. It’s a toss up between the bad guys from Karate Kid part 1, or red ass-less chaps. Xmas is good for 2 reasons, drinking and Bill Murray movies’

For anyone who is new to a Goo Grrrl Records night, what sort of vibe could they expect?

‘It’s a communal thing, the bands we ask to play are bands that we like and don’t necessarily have massive lucrative record deals because they are different to what the music industry deems sell-able. So if your sick of the same old thing, it has your name written all over that vibe’

We understand that this is Antlered Mans final show of 2011. Can we prepare ourselves for anything different as a final blow out for whats been a successful year for you?

‘Apart from the possibility of the visual treat of ass-less chaps, we are playing new songs we’ve been working on and after a 2000 year hiatus, Jesus Christ is returning and will be DJing some rock and his favourite childhood metal favourites. No shit, he’s on board’

Do you have any exciting gossip to share regarding the Goo Grrrl Records label?

‘Yes, there is also a very successful German website with almost the same name, don’t look it up with children around though. Little warning’

What plans do you have for Goo Grrrl Records in the new year?

‘Releasing the full album here and in Europe, plus we are in talks to work with some bigger bands on some split live recordings, but that’s still in the early stages, it would be good to bring it to the Macbeth in the new year’

So there you have it folks. For a chance to catch Antlered Man on their final show of 2011, possibly sporting ass-less chaps. Not to mention support from Exit International and DJs playing your favourite Metal and Rock sounds head to your favourite Hoxton music venue The Macbeth on Tonight from 8pm. If that’s not enough, entry wont cost you a dime! You could say Christmas has come early……

See you in the grotto children!

Mission Creep is a new monthly club night run by Emily Mackay (NME), Alex Denney (NME, Stool Pigeon) and Daniel Djan (Fiction, Flats, What’s My Name?) at The Macbeth on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Ahead of their next visit on Tuesday (8th November) where by they will be featuring a selection of their favourite new bands plus guest DJs playing all your favourite indie/alternative records. We thought it would be a good idea to get in contact with Mission Creeps Daniel Djan to give us a better idea of what’s in-store for us come 8pm Tuesday night. Here’s what secrets he had to tell us. Enjoy….

What sort of vibe can we expect at next Tuesdays ‘Mission Creep’ event?

‘It’s Pet’s Debut London show who have been getting a bit of press in magazines like NME etc. so we are quite excited for that obviously and we managed to get two very decent supports in Trailer Trash Tracys and Crushed Beaks, both of which will be turning heads left, right and centre in the near future. There will be DJs playing lots of classic indie and alternative tracks before and after the bands as well so hopefully people will be staying for a drink and a dance until closing time and not leave right after the bands have finished.’

We are aware there will be guest DJs. Can you tell us what kind of music we might be hearing?

‘Anything from the Smiths to the Horrors, The Strokes, Active Child and also more upbeat stuff like Caribou, The Weeknd etc. etc. If you have any requests I guess you can just leave a message on the event wall and we’ll see what we can do.’

How long has ‘Mission Creep been’ running for now?

‘The next one’s only the second one so we’re still in our infantry’!

What’s the inspiration behind the name ‘Mission Creep’?

‘Emily (Mackay, NME Journalist and co-promoter of the night) came up with the name with one of their friends. I think it was meant to be their name for their fictional band or something.’

I understand that the night is run with NME journalists, This must be a great help for getting different bands in…

’It’s just a couple of friends of mine who I thought it would be fun to put nights on with. The fact that they can feed us with the odd tip from the NME towers obviously helps a bit but it’s just great fun doing it with two people I have a lot of respect for both musically and personally. And also Emily is our in-house artist and very helpful with stuff like designing posters etc’!

What can you tell us about the bands you have got in for the next ‘Mission Creep’?

‘It’s probably best to just give them a listen and see what you make of them yourself. Links to the music can be found on the facebook event.’

We understand that you also help run the ever so popular ‘What’s my name?’ here at The Macbeth. Will there be any familiarities to this event on Tuesday at ‘Mission Creep’?

‘Quite frankly, no, not really. WMN? is a completely different vibe to Mission Creep and a lot more commercial, I guess.’

So there you have it folks. Visit The Macbeth on Tuesday 8th November to catch live performances from ‘Pet’, ‘Trailer Trash Tracys’ and ‘Crushed Beaks’ as well as a host of DJs playing out your favourite body moving classics. Doors are from 8pm with a £3 admission. Last but not least, as Dan previously mentioned, if you have any requests post them onto the event wall and they’ll see what they can do.

See you there party people…

The time of year has come once again when we raid our local supermarkets for sweets, fancy dress essentials and of course eggs. Here at The Macbeth we are getting ever so excited for the Halloween season, which is why we have a number of spooky themed nights to get you in the mood.

Ahead of this Saturdays ‘Whoopi Goldberg’s Halloween Frat Party’ we thought it was only right to get in contact with Frat Party’s Tim Hilton in order to get a better understanding of what tricks and treats are in store for us. For your very own viewing pleasure, here’s what Tim had to say…

For kids who are new on the ‘Frat Party’ scene, What can they expect at this Saturdays Halloween event?
‘Well you can be sure to expect the usual Frat Party vibes such as our trademark red plastic cups and beer bongs as well as an awesome Beer Pong Tournament. It’s free to enter the tournament as usual but there’s some super special Halloween prizes for the winners so be sure to enter if you think you’ve got what it takes… There’s obviously going to be loads of other goodies, but you’ll have to wait and see’!

We understand that guys from both ‘Electic Like Whoopi’ and ‘Frat Party’ are teaming up for it. Bringing along a generous host of DJs, what kind of records can we expect will leave our ear drums ringing?
‘We’ve got some of our favourite DJ’s coming down to play and it’s hard to list it all here without running the risk of ruining the internet, but there’s going to be a truly awesome mix of all your favourite party tracks, as well as some special little gems of course. Just make sure to put your dancing shoes on and we’ll take care of you’!

You’ve got some free drinks from 8-10, What have you got coming in? How could you be so kind? Not that we’re complaining of course.
‘Well it’s all thanks to our legendary friends over at Fentimans and Relentless, they’ve been so kind as to give us drinks to give to you. We’ve got an alcoholic ginger beer called Hollows, and with the Relentless and black vodka courtesy of Eristoff we’re going to mix up some special Halloween cocktails for everyone to enjoy. It’s definitely one not to miss’!

Other then the fun activities on offer such as beer pong tournaments, beer bongs and free sweets. Should we raid our parents wardrobes for horrific fancy dress costumes? If so, is there any particular theme?
‘Well I’d love to see some zombie Whoopi Goldbergs on the night, but all scary costumes are welcome. Scratch that, ALL costumes! We love people dressing up. And I can say that we will be giving away good stuff to people who make a real effort, so put some thought into it’!
Can we expect any more ‘Frat Party vs…’?
‘Absolutely, if there’s anything better than putting on a party it’s putting on a party with friends! There’s plenty more Frat Parties to come, and I can reveal that there’s going to be a real special one in December… Remember, you heard it here first’!

So there you have it folks. No need to go knocking on strangers doors for parties or money this Halloween. Head to The Macbeth on Saturday for all the fun and sweets you could possibly consume. From 8 ‘til late, get your full name on the Facebook wall for £3 entry. £5 otherwise. And don’t forget, as Tim ever so generously said, FREE drinks for the first two hours so get down early. See you at the bar scaredy cats…

We caught up with Mike Title this week. The guy who brings Violate Your Brain to The Macbeth every month. Armed with 5 questions regarding the event here’s what he had to say…

-Whats the vibe at a Violate Your Brain event?

“The vibe is drunk. You walk in and you move about and you drink a lot of shots, really slam then down and then you start kissing people and all the bass comes out of the speakers and people start chanting shit like ‘GET THAT FOOL’ and the bouncers come in and everyone is in lust and happy like heaven with Biggie Smalls and angels shaking booty.”

-What is the reasoning behind the name?

“Destroy everything. Sweat vociferously. Do everything rhythmically til it hurts.”

-The artwork for the events seem to follow a recurring kind of theme. Can you tell us the inspiration behind them?

“The theme is a big brain. The brain is a big holy sacred symbol of fertility and eroticism in my tribe.”

-Some of the events have been tribute related, such as Tupac anniversary death day party. Do you have anything like this planned for the near future?

“I plan nothing too much in advance. One never knows what is around the corner. Tupac was murdered by a big brain that was controlled by the CIA in a laboratory. You can read about it on the Internet.”

-What can people expect this Saturday at The Macbeth?

“Well anything. It is for each individual to make the party. The party is a state of mind before we choose to engage before we leave our beds and if you’re lucky when you go home you will have a party in your bed with maybe more than one lover. Take care of your livers children and beware cos at midnight to signify the end of this reign of illuminati terror by Jay Z and Beyonce we will be holding a satanic ritual where we slay the child that Rihanna has had with Jay Z. A knife will be plunged into the paper mâché baby to lift the curse at midnight. It the illuminati party and we are going to have a lot of fun. You really should come early.”

Well there you have it folks. Visit The Macbeth this Saturday (22nd October) from 8pm when Violate Your Brain will once again be in town. £3 before midnight. Get down early and don’t miss out.
